Project Description

A dedicated and specially-trained citizen science team was organized in 2016 to collect special observations during extreme coastal storm events in Port Townsend, Washington, and to leverage the larger King Tides program managed by Washington Sea Grant. The team was coordinated by volunteers from a local climate action group, with the intention of eventually utilizing the data to validate and improve sea level rise flood mapping efforts. Technical support is provided by Washington Sea Grant. To date the team has monitored 15 separate extreme coastal water level events, collecting photographs, estimates of total water level, and still water level and meteorological data collected at a co-located tide gauge.

Challenges

As a monitoring project there is a desire to see some near-term outcomes, but its not clear what those near-term outcomes should be
